Chapter 6

Vincent ended up spending the entire weekend with Anthony. They enjoyed plenty of quality time, including sex, but most of the time, they were at the bakery together. He had an inkling running a business could be frustrating, but he never knew the extent of the stress and exhaustion until he accompanied Anthony for almost the entire day at the bakery on Sunday. The issues, big or small, could range from missing or running out of ingredients, worrying about an employee who called in sick and having to find someone else to cover the shift, and all the way to dealing with the books for tax purposes.

Granted, Anthony had managers to handle most of those tasks, but Vincent was aware his boyfriend had a hands-on approach to his business. Vincent might not be able to help out with everything, but he did his best. By the time he returned to work on Monday, he had a whole new level of appreciation for those people who had their own businesses. Hence, after a quick lunch, he bade farewell to his friends, telling them he had an errand to run. He actually wanted to find the perfect Lunar New Year gift for Anthony.

Tradition-wise, most people would generally present one another with red packets and fruits, but he was determined to find something more unique for Anthony. After all, the upcoming Lunar New Year would be their first one together. He thought he would roam around some of the shops, hoping to get an idea or two. When he entered a shop that specialized in selling tea and other items related to it, it was rather crowded. He figured he would have more than ample time to browse through the entire shop. What he didn’t expect was to bump into Joy, his sister-in-law. His eyes widened in astonishment, and it was obvious to him she was just as astounded.

“Hey.”

Joy smiled at Vincent and nodded, but he could feel the weird tension between them. “Last-minute shopping before the big day?”

Vincent shook his head. “Just looking around for the right gift for my…my friend.”

Joy was quiet for a second or two. “A boyfriend?”

For a brief moment, Vincent was petrified. Then he reminded himself he was an adult, and he couldn’t care less what his family thought about him anymore. Besides, Joy had never struck him as the kind of person who was homophobic. She was simply stuck between him and her loyalty toward his parents and older brother.

“Yeah.”

“I see. Does Victor know? Or Mom and Dad?”

Vincent snorted. “No and no.”

“Are you going to?”

“Should I?” Vincent retorted, his tone of voice coming out a little sharper than he intended. “Sorry.”

Joy grinned at Vincent as if to reassure him. “It’s fine. I shouldn’t have asked. It’s none of my business.”

Vincent waved off her apology. “Don’t worry about it.”

After that, the two of them continued to gaze at one item after another inside the shop in silence. Vincent was relieved when Joy spoke up first because he really didn’t know what to say to her.
